James Thurlby Wins Newcomer Title at East Midlands Care Awards
Nottingham’s James Thurlby has been crowned winner of the Care Newcomer category at the Great East Midlands Care Awards 2011.
James was presented with his award by TV presenter Vanessa Feltz on Friday night, 7th October, at a gala dinner held at the East Midlands Conference Centre, Nottingham.
James (25) has been working for West Bridgford based home care agency PerCurra for two years and shows great sensitivity and empathy to the clients he supports. After being selected as a finalist for the Awards, James was interviewed by the judges. They were looking for someone who thoroughly understands the role of carer and who can demonstrate excellent people skills, best practice and shows empathy and responsiveness.
The judges described James as exceptional, saying his passion and commitment shone through. They added that James demonstrated a real personal touch to his work whilst wanting to ensure everyone he works with are safe and happy. Having experienced personally the consequence of poor care he seeks to make a real difference to others in the future by making sure the care he provides is the best.
Winning the East Midlands title now puts James in line for a national award at the finals of the Great British Care Awards to be held next year.
Commenting on his award success James said: “I was in complete shock as I didn’t expect to win. Obviously you don’t need awards to know if you are doing a good job because the clients say when they are happy but it is nice to know that people think you are making a difference.”
Colleagues at PerCurra are delighted for James. Registered Care Manager Jane Bemrose said: “James is an outstanding carer who has made a huge difference to the quality of life of those he supports. He is extremely respectful of people’s wishes and is careful and diligent. Clients feel confident in h is care and his ability to build rapport with those he cares for and with their families is appreciated by everyone he works with.”
